Mary Rose's Own Words

On how she became interested in fine art:

“I’ve enjoyed painting and drawing since I was a child.  My parents encouraged my interest and provided me with the necessary materials, the space to paint and with lessons.   Even during the years of working full time and raising my family when finding time to paint was difficult, I studied nature and carefully observed the world around me.”

On her favorite memories of painting:

“Over the last few years, I’ve enjoyed painting en plein air at favorite locations around New England, including Cape Ann, Cape Cod and many places around the Merrimac Valley.  I have shared these experiences with other artists whose company I enjoy.  In addition to painting portraits and figurative works, I enjoy painting landscapes.”

On her goals as an artist:

“I strive for excellence in perfecting my technical skills and remain open to learn from past and present masters whose work I admire.”

Her favorite quote on painting:

“There are moments in our lives; there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom.  If one could but recall his vision as some sort of sign.  It was in this hope that the arts were invented.  Sign-posts on the way to what may be.  Sign-posts toward greater knowledge.”                                         Robert Henri
